Nu 2014 voorbij is kijken veel artiesten terug op hun jaar. Zo deed ook Damon Albarn. 25 jaar na zijn debuut bracht Damon afgelopen jaar zijn eerste solo album ‘Everyday Robots’ uit en tourde hij langs alle grote festivals wereldwijd. In een interview met het Franse magazine ‘Les Inrocks’ vertelde Albarn onder andere over zijn solo album, “I’m doing this for years: I write songs, I record them and I present them to the world. I have not changed my way of working on it”.
Over z’n creativiteit verklaarde Albarn het volgende: “I work up to 17 hours, five days a week. If I go a day without writing or creating, it’ll bother me when I go to bed”, en over z’n grote inspiratiebron, “I had the chance to work on the new album of Tony Allen, who is my greatest teacher. At 74, Tony is incredible”.
Ook de serieuze onderwerpen komen ter sprake. Zo overleed in 2014 zijn goede vriend en soulzanger Bobby Womack “The death of Bobby was probably the saddest event for me this year. He was an incredible singer. Working alongside with Gorillaz or to his own albums helped me realise my limitations”. Ook was Albarn erg begaan met de situatie van afgelopen jaar in Mali en Syrië “The situation in Syria is what saddens me most in the world today”.
Tussendoor vertelde Albarn dat hij door het avontuur van z’n soloalbum kalmer en vrolijker is geworden dan hij ooit is geweest: “I found peace. I’ve never been someone really sad, but I’ve always had an element of melancholy.”
Ook blijkt Albarn tegenwoordig veel rust te vinden in koken. “When I’m not working, I cook. I love it. It has increased since the birth of my daughter. I have experienced it as a tragic fact when she doesn’t like my cooking.”
Maar na het terugkijken op 2014 willen we nu toch graag weten wat we in 2015 kunnen verwachten van Damon. “I work on a big project for the National Theatre Company and one for the Manchester International Festival. I also started to seriously talk about Gorillaz with Jamie Hewlett. In short, there may be some records in 2015”. We zijn benieuwd.
