Het concert dat Queen in 1986 gaf in Budapest tijdens hun ‘The Magic Tour’ is opnieuw opgepoetst, en zal opnieuw in de bioscoop te zien zijn.
Op 7 oktober verschijnt ‘Queen Budapest’ wereldwijd in de bioscoop en IMAX. De concertfilm legde in 1986 de allereerste westerse stadionrockshow
Het historische optreden vond plaats op 27 juli 1986 in het Népstadion in Boedapest tijdens The Magic Tour. Voor een uitverkocht stadion met 80.000 fans, en nog eens circa 45.000 toehoorders buiten de poorten, schreef Queen geschiedenis als eerste westerse rockband die optrad in de toenmalige communistische staat. Het concert werd destijds vastgelegd op 35mm-film door zeventien van de beste lokale cameramannen, die daarvoor letterlijk alle beschikbare filmrolletjes in het land hebben opgebruikt.
Slechts een maand na deze show kwam er, na vijf laatste optredens, definitief een einde aan de tourjaren van de band met Freddie Mercury. ‘Queen Budapest’ is daardoor de allerlaatste gefilmde live-registratie van de band op het absolute toppunt van hun roem. De film bevat legendarische uitvoeringen van klassiekers als ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘A Kind Of Magic, Radio Ga Ga’ en ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, evenals een bijzondere akoestische vertolking van het traditionele Hongaarse volkslied ‘Tavaszi Szél Vizet Áraszt’.
“For years, fans behind the Iron Curtain had been able to listen to Queen music only on illegal cassettes. It was a forbidden thing to listen to rock bands like us, so to see them play in a live show would have been unthinkable,” vertelt Brian May. “This concert, when they could finally come and see us live in person and interact with us, was a huge emotional moment for them and also for us. It felt like a very big deal – you could feel that incredible energy. There will never be an event quite like that again.”
Ook Roger Taylor blikt terug op het bijzondere optreden: “We did love to think that the music could transcend the politics, the political barriers, and that was sort of part of our ethos, to actually bring the audience into the show and make them feel part of the show. When the audience just started singing, we realised, wow, music really can be a great cause.”
Voor deze jubileumuitgave werd het originele filmmateriaal frame voor frame in 4K gerestaureerd door Park Road Post Production (bekend van regisseur Sir Peter Jackson) in Nieuw-Zeeland. Daarnaast is de audio vanaf de originele multitrack-banden opnieuw gemixt door het studioteam van Queen.
Over de restauratie vult Brian May aan: “Peter Jackson’s team have done a magnificent job of restoring the original film footage, at the highest resolution ever; it’s pristine and the quality is breathtaking. Now, in IMAX and movie theatres, it’s going to be definitively the most real experience ever of us, Queen, in our glory days. I think people will get lost in it and even forget they’re watching a film.”
