Gisteren kondigde Joe Bonamassa zijn nieuwe studio solo album ‘Blues Of Desperation’ aan, die op 25 maart uitkomt via Provogue. De voor een Grammy genomineerde artiest heeft, net als voor zijn vorige plaat ‘Different Shades of Blue’, alle nummers zelf geschreven en legt daarmee de lat voor het blues-rock genre wederom weer wat hoger. “I want people to hear my evolution as a blues-rock musician,” zegt Bonamassa, “somebody who isn’t resting on accomplishments and who is always pushing forward and thinking about how music can evolve and stay relevant.”

Net als voor het vorige album ging Bonamassa opnieuw naar Nashville voor de schrijfsessie van Blues Of Desperation om daar samen te werken met de top van de muziek schrijvers scene, zoals James House, Tom Hambridge, Jeffrey Steele, Jerry Flowers en Gary Nicholson. “These are some of the best guys in the business,” zegt Bonamassa enthousiast. “Lyrically, you’ll hear the proverbial trains, mountains, valleys and other blues references about heartbreak and loneliness, but there are also some poignant moments about getting away from the stressful, crazy demands of life and losing yourself with your special someone. I think anybody will be able to relate.”
Samen met Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey), de producer waar Joe al jaren mee samenwerkt hebben ze in Nashville’s Grand Victor Sound Studios (voormalig RCA Studio A) in vijf dagen 11 nummers opgenomen met een groep uitzonderlijke muzikanten. Zo waren daar drummers Anton Fig en Greg Morrow, bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboard speler Reese Wynans, blazers Lee Thornburg, Paulie Cerra en Mark Douthit, en achtergrond zangeressen Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae en Juanita Tippins.
Over zijn jarenlange samenwerking met Kevin Shirley zegt Bonamassa het volgende: “I can explain our relationship with one word – ‘trust.’ I completely trust in Kevin and his musical promptings. He pushes my musical ability by challenging me to not just rest on my laurels or settle for ‘good.’ He expects more out of the other musicians as well and will not hold back when he sees us falling back into our usual routine.”
“Which sometimes calls for unorthodox measures”, zegt Shirley, die toegeeft dat zijn idee om de recording band uit te breiden met een extra drummer was bedoeld om de boel een beetje wakker te schudden “I wanted him to work a little harder, like in his early years,” zegt hij, “so I brought in an additional drummer, just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons.” Shirley is heel blij met het resultaat, “Recording Blues Of Desperation is one of the most exciting recording projects I’ve done. What a joyful noise we made!”
Blues of Desperation is Bonamassa’s meest diverse en moedigste album tot nu met songs variërend van het gruizige bluesy ‘This Train’ (met Joe’s gitaar op “rude”) tot de elegante, maar o zo emotionele, verpletterende ballad ‘What I’ve Known For A Very Long Time’. Maar ook de gevoelige, akoestisch–achtige Americana van ‘The Valley Runs Low’, waarop Bonamassa stem het voortreffelijk opneemt tegen Barnes, McRae en Tippins tot gospel achtige extase. En dan is er nog het ietwat vage en Tequila doordrenkte ‘Drive’, druipend van een soort rauwe, onheilspellende emotie die David Lynch groen van jaloezie zou maken.
De gehele plaat is doorspekt van episch gitaarspel en een magistrale sound. De fans, die kortgeleden Bonamassa nog tot beste gitarist verkozen in diverse gitaar bladen over de hele wereld, zullen Blues of Desperation beschouwen als een schatkist met gitaar juwelen. “There are some long solos on this record and even some mini-jams in the middle of a track where the band would just jive and crank it out,” zegt Joe. “During those jams, we do a tip of the hat to Beck and Clapton from the ‘70s. I think guitar nerds and music fans like myself will love it.”
