Op het moment dat zijn live DVD “Beacon Theatre – Live in New York” op nummer 1 staat in de DVD Top 30, kondigt Joe zijn nieuwe, dertiende studio album “Driving towards the daylight”aan. Opnieuw is Bonamassa de samenwerking aangegaan met Kevin “Caveman” Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin) en de opnamen vonden plaats in The Village Recorder in Los Angeles en Studio at the Palms in Las Vegas.
“We’ve taken some really traditional old blues songs – the Howlin’ Wolf song ‘Who’s Been Talkin’ and Robert Johnson’s ‘Stones In My Passway,’” aldus Shirley, “and we’ve tried to imagine how they would do them in a rock context. It’s a very exciting return to the blues in a very visceral way. It’s vibrant and it’s gutsy and it’s really, really rugged.”
Een unieke groep muzikanten werd verzameld om dit album op te nemen, niemand minder dan Aerosmith gitarist Brad Whitford (gitaar), Blondie Chaplan (gitaar), Anton Fig (drums en percussie), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboard), Michael Rhodes (bas), Carmine Rojas (bas), Jeff Bova and The Bovaland Brass, Pat Thrall (gitaar), en Whitford’s zoon Harrison Whitford (gitaar).
Op het album staan vijf nieuw geschreven nummers door Bonamassa, waaronder de onstuimige opener Dislocated Boy, de ‘road warrior’ titeltrack Driving Towards The Daylight, I Got All You Need, Heavenly Soul en Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go. Verder prachtige Bonamassa versies van Tom Waits’ New Coat Of Paint, Bill Withers’ Lonely Town Lonely Street, en Bernie Marsden’s A Place In My Heart. Op het laatste nummer van het album zingt de Australische rock zanger Jimmy Barnes zijn hit uit 1987 “Too Much Ain’t Enough Love.”
