Joe Bonamassa, 2-voudig genomineerd voor een Grammy komt met een gloednieuw studio album ‘Redemption’, welke uitkomt via Provogue/Mascot Label Group in Europa op 21 september.
‘Redemption’ is Bonamassa’s 13e solo studio album en zijn derde op rij met alleen eigen materiaal en het is zijn meest ambitieuze en diverse tot nu toe en een waarmee hij opnieuw de grenzen verlegt van de blues-rock. Het album bevat 12 opbeurende songs die het gevolg zijn van een nieuwe fase in zijn leven die Joe op dit moment doormaakt. “I’m going through some other stuff in my life I didn’t expect to be going through. It’s a rising, it’s contrition, it’s acceptance, it’s everything. It’s painful, but knowing that there’s a rising coming,” legt Joe uit.
Dit album brengt Bonamassa weer samen met een aantal van de beste muzikanten uit Nashville: Tom Hambridge, James House, Gary Nicholson en ook Richard Page, Dion Dimucci en het zet zijn langdurige samenwerking met Kevin Shirley voort. “From a producer’s perspective, this is far and away the most challenging and diverse album that Joe has ever made, “ zegt Shirley.
Het album is opgenomen op verschillende locaties zoals Blackbird Studios, Nashville TN, The Cave Australia, Sydney OZ, Studio At The Palms, Las Vegas NV, Criteria Hit Factory, Miami FL en Addiction Sound Studios, Nashville TN. Wederom werd er gewerkt met topmuzikanten: drummer Anton Fig, bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardspeler Reese Wynans, hoorn spelers Lee Thornburg en Paulie Cerra, harmony zanger Gary Pinto, background zangeressen Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae en Juanita Tippins. Kevin Shirley introduceerde ook twee extra gitaristen Kenny Greenberg and Doug Lancio. “It was interesting, because having two extra guitar players involved, allowed me to play a certain way,” zegt Bonamassa hierover.
‘Redemption’ bevat grote thema’s als verlossing en redding maar ook het gevoel van kracht en empowerment. “It’s this yearning to redeem yourself after just this tremendous loss and this tremendous feeling of pain,” legt Bonamassa uit. The sense of vulnerability unfolds in the opening lines of the title track: “She took the fire as she was leaving, no forgiveness and no confession, now I’m sifting through the cold grey ashes, looking for peace and my redemption.”
Bonamassa: “I really feel the new material is deeper, lyrically and musically! We try to get a little deeper every time we come out.” En Shirley voegt toe: “It is a brand-new look at the Blues, in what is clearly Joe’s deepest and darkest most personal album yet, which is a masterpiece of desperation – melodic and cinematic in this presentation.”
Als je de hele plaat door luistert voel je de ups en downs, voor elke diepe emotie staat er een swingend moment van plezier tegenover, maar het altijd voorzien van het geweldige gitaarspel van Bonamassa. “I think this record could have some of the best writing I’ve ever done along with James House, he’s a national treasure that guy, Tom Hambridge, the same thing, Gary Nicholson, Gordon Kennedy and Danny Flowers. I’m really excited for people to hear it and it’s not the same thing that I’ve done. It’s different, good different, not just different for the sake of being different.” zegt Joe.
Bonamassa, recent nog te zien in Grolloo bereikt zijn creatieve hoogtepunt tot nu toe op ‘Redemption’ en volgt hiermee het geweldige album ‘Blues of Desperation’ uit 2016 op welke op nummer 2 binnenkwam in de Album Top 100.
