Voorjaar 2022. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger: Fish staat nog steeds fier overeind. Zijn muzikaal en tekstueel intense afscheidsalbum ‘Weltschmerz’ van twee jaar eerder is bijzonder goed ontvangen door critici en fans. Fish heeft de vrije tijd die hij noodgedwongen door de maatregelen tegen het coronavirus kreeg goed benut. Zo omarmde en intensiveerde zijn andere grote passie – tuinieren, hetgeen hem veel rust in zijn hoofd gaf, en ruimte tot contemplatie.
Fish lanceerde tevens zijn wekelijkse succesvolle Facebook live stream ‘Fish On Friday’ waar gemiddeld 50.000 mensen naar keken; tackelde zijn fysieke en mentale problemen en werkte een ambitieus project uit: het uitpluizen van zijn solo-catalogus. Om de Brexit-problematiek te omzeilen sloot Fish vorig jaar een deal met het Nederlandse distributie- en merchandise bedrijf M&E, verantwoordelijk voor de fysieke distributie in Europa.
Fish: “I’m just glad I found a partner in M&E and that I have a bridge across to my fanbase in Europe. It’s not a situation I ever wanted or imagined, and I admit to finding it difficult to deal with sometimes, but I just have to manage as best as I can. All I can hope for is that in the next Scottish independence referendum a ‘yes’ vote takes the day and that we manage to re-join the EU at some point in the future. Leave a light on for us.”
De in 2020 geannuleerde Europese afscheidsshows zullen pas in 2023 worden ingehaald: “I made the decision last year not to book any shows in 2022 and to hold off my ‘Farewell Tour’ until 2023 when hopefully the live music industry has regained its balance and both artists and audience can perform, and attend shows with confidence.”
Voor dit jaar en 2023 staan er enkele remasters en live-releases gepland. De eerste is nu uit, ‘The Last Straw Live in Glasgow 2018’.
