De psychedelische rockband All Them Witches brengt op 28 september zijn nieuwe studioalbum ‘ATW’ uit op New West Records. ‘FISHBELLY 86 ONIONS’, de eerste single afkomstig van het album is nu uit.
‘ATW’ is het vijfde studioalbum van de band bestaande uit Charles Michael Parks Jr (zang), Robby Staebler (drums), Ben McLeod (gitaar) en Jonathan Draper (toetsen). Vaak hebben bands rond het vijfde album wel een ‘vaste’ sound, maar All Them Witches besloot het helemaal anders te doen. Op de voorganger ‘Sleeping Through the War’, dat verscheen in 2017, was een grootser geluid te horen dan men tot nu toe van de band gewend was. En dat sloeg aan. Het zou dus een logische stap geweest zijn om hierop voort te borduren. Maar de band besloot het roer toch om te gooien.
All Them Witches vond zichzelf opnieuw uit en voegde Jonathan Draper toe aan de band. Ze huurden een hut in de buurt van Nashville, en namen het album daar zelf op. De opnames werden vervolgens gemixt door Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Kurt Vile), wat resulteerde in hun meest intieme album tot nu toe. Het is geen toeval dat het album ‘ATW’ is genoemd. ‘ATW’ is een reactie op een ‘grotere band’ zijn of worden. Het is rauwer en vangt All Them Witches in dit moment.
De eerste single van het album heet ‘FISHBELLY 86 ONIONS’ en is nu uit. All Them Witches over het nummer: “’FISHBELLY 86 ONIONS’ is a jumbo-sized grease trap sandwich, stuffed with everything we love and don’t need, and everything we think we need, but can’t find, and everything we find only to realize that the shiny coating rotted off years ago, and the chrome is dented, and the makeup is smeared, and the ideals are confused, and the people have contorted themselves into off-brand cartoon characters. It is entertainment (for a price), and all of the too-cool nobodies that can’t look anyone else in the eyes for fear of exposing their fraudulent nature. It is my hometown, complete with every rusty train track. It is the pains of having a hometown. It is a sloppy 1 take party, hold the onions please.”
