Röyksopp brengt op 24 november haar vijfde en laatste album uit met de toepasselijke titel ‘The Inevitable End’. Het is het meest persoonlijke album van Röyksopp tot nu toe en de tweede release in zes maanden nadat Torbjørn Brundtland en Svein Berge samen met Robyn eind mei het minialbum ‘Do It Again’ uitbrachten. ‘The Inevitable End’ is donkerder van thematiek met een nadruk op de tekstuele content. Svein licht toe: ‘With The Inevitable End we’ve moved into a darker subject matter, with emphasis on the lyrical content. This candid approach feels very both personal, sincere and conclusive,’ waaraan Torbjørn toevoegt: ‘With this album it became clear we wanted to make an album in a classical sense even if it’s the last one we make.’
Na vijf albums zal het tweetal in de toekomst experimenteler omgaan met de manier waarop ze haar muziek deelt. ‘The Inevitable End’ is dus geen afscheid van Röyksopp, maar wel een afscheid van Röyksopp als albumartiest. ’We feel like this is a goodbye to the traditional album format. In our consecutive run of albums, we have been able to say what we want to say and do what we want to do with the LP. We’re not going to stop making music, but the album format as such, this is the last thing from us.’
‘The Inevitable End’ kent bijdragen van Jamie Irrepressible, Ryan James (Man Without Country), de Noorse singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfør en natuurlijk Robyn. Met de aankondiging van ‘The Inevitable End’ heeft Röyksopp ook de openingstrack ‘Skull’ online gezet. Eerder al deed ze dat met ‘Monument (The Inevitable End version)’ waarmee ze een brug sloeg tussen ‘Do It Again’ en dit nieuwe album.
