De Brusselse artiest YellowStraps zal op 27 januari 2023 zijn nieuwe studioalbum ’tentacle’ uitbrengen via Haliblue Records en Universal Music France. Het album werd in in Parijs, Montreal, Seoul, Brussel, Genève, London, Berlijn en Amsterdam geschreven en de mix en master werd verzorgd door Marcus Linon van Greasy Records. De nieuwe single ‘notice’ is nu uit.
’tentacle’ is tot stand gekomen tussen de wil om YellowsStraps voort te zetten (nadat zijn broer Alban besloot ermee te stoppen) en een nieuwe horizonten te verkennen. Yvan Murenzi diept zijn vocale vaardigheden (in het Engels, maar ook in het Frans) verder uit, zowel op het gebied van zangtechniek als op het gebied van de manipulatie van elektronische effecten. Maar eigenlijk is het belangrijkste dat hij zich weer met productie bezighoudt (dat was Alban’s speelterrein geworden), alleen of met een paar goede vrienden, zoals Jad El Alam (zijn manager) of Victor Defoort (zijn bassist). “I enjoy working as a close team, because we can all bring something to the table without compromising the creative direction. What I’m looking for is extremely precise in my mind.”, aldus Yvan Murenzi (YellowStraps).
Er is een creatief verlangen naar iets dat steeds meer hybride wordt, waarbij rock invloeden uit zijn jeugd worden vermengd met R&B, neo-soul en electronica. Het is een zoektocht naar onbeschrijfelijke emoties. “I’ve spent days working on certain sounds and structures that weren’t conventional, like a mad scientist in his lab. It was a way of marking my territory, redefining the boundaries of what YellowStraps was to me.”
Alles verandert, behalve zijn favoriete onderwerp: liefde. Dat wat verheft en verstikt, vaak in één beweging. “My lyrics are about what touches me the deepest, what overwhelms me. I’ve always found it fascinating how relationships can take us far and induce extreme feelings.” Het is het enige onderwerp waar tentacle de knoop doorhakt op een trilogie. “The ‘Blame’ EP was me opening the floodgates of hatred after my first long term relationship. Goldress was a more thoughtful reflection on a failed relationship. ’tentacle’ embodies the acceptance phase. Love is always a mess, but I’m at peace with that.”
De nieuwe single notice gaat eveneens over liefde: “ ‘notice’ is undoubtedly the track that represents most the situation of stalemate in a relationship, the underlying theme throughout the record! It depicts that moment when you feel you’ve tried everything to save what you have but get constantly drawnback to facing yourself and your own thoughts without knowing what to do next…”.
De nieuwe YellowStraps is er, zowel rijp door de opgedane ervaringen als bloeiend van jeugdigheid en inventiviteit. ’tentacle’ voert je langs mentale landschappen en de angsten van het hart.
