Na 10 albums, zes GRAMMY-awards en een reeks uitverkochte tours over de hele wereld, zijn The Black Keys terug. Het duo brengt dit voorjaar hun elfde studioalbum ‘Dropout Boogie’ uit bij Nonesuch Records. Het album bevat samenwerkingen met Billy F. Gibbons (gitaarlegende ZZ Top), Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound), en Angelo Petraglia (Kings of Leon). De eerste single ‘Wild Child’ is nu overal te beluisteren, samen met een door Bryan Schlam geregisseerde videoclip.
Voor het nieuwe album grijpen Dan Auerbach en Patrick Carney terug naar de bluesrock van hun beginjaren. Zoals altijd heeft het duo al het materiaal voor ‘Dropout Boogie’ geschreven in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville. Na het uitwerken van de eerste ideeën, verwelkomde het duo ook legendes Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright en Angelo Petraglia voor de studio sessies.
Hoewel The Black Keys al eerder nummers schreven met hun vaste producer/medewerker Danger Mouse, is dit de eerste keer dat ze meerdere nieuwe collaborators uitnodigden. Zowel Cartwright als Petraglia zijn te horen op de eerste single van het aankomende album, ‘Wild Child’.
“That’s always been the beauty of the thing Pat and I do. It’s instant,” vertelt Auerbach. “We’ve never really had to work at it. Whenever we’d get together, we’d just make music, you know? We didn’t know what we were going to do, but we’d just do it and it would sound cool. It’s the natural chemistry Pat and I have. Being in a band this long is a testament to that. It was a real gift that we were given. I mean, the odds of being plopped down a block-and-a-half from each other in Akron, Ohio–it just seems crazy.”
“Living in Nashville and making records here has opened both of our minds to that experience a little bit more,” said Auerbach. “I knew Pat would love working with both of these guys, so we decided we’d give it a shot. It was the first time we’d ever really done that. It was fun as hell. We just sat around a table with acoustic guitars and worked out a song ahead of time.” “The cool thing with Greg is that he wants to approach stuff with a story in mind — there’s a plot, almost,” voegt Carney toe.
Over The Black Keys
The Black Keys – opgericht in Akron, Ohio in 2001 – bestaan uit zanger/gitarist Dan Auerbach en drummer Patrick Carney. Vorig jaar ontving het duo zijn veertiende GRAMMY nominatie, dit keer in de categorie Best Contemporary Blues Album voor ‘Delta Kream’ van mei 2021. Het project – dat elf Mississippi hill country blues songs bevat van artiesten als R.L. Burnside en Junior Kimbrough – was hun vijfde opeenvolgende top 10-debuut in The Billboard 200. Ook internationaal belandde het album in menig top 10-lijsten. Hier kwam de plaat binnen op de tweede plaats in de Nederlandse GFK albumcharts.
De Associated Press heeft The Black Keys als “rock royalty” bestempeld. Sinds hun opvallend debuut met ‘The Big Come Up’ uit 2002, volgen de successen elkaar op. In 2003 brachten ze ‘Thickfreakness’ uit, wat gevolgd werd door ‘Rubber Factory’ (2004), ‘Magic Potion’ (2006), ‘Attack & Release’ (2008), ‘Brothers’ (2010), ‘El Camino’ (2011), ‘Turn Blue’ (2014), ‘Let’s Rock’ (2019) en ten slotte ‘Delta Kream’ (2021). Deze zomer touren de heren van The Black Keys door de VS met de ‘Dropout Boogie Tour’ met special guest Band Of Horses.
