The Wombats trappen een nieuwe fase van hun constant evoluerende succesverhaal af met de aankondiging van hun vijfde studioalbum ‘Fix Yourself, Not The World’, dat op 7 januari 2022 via AWAL wordt uitgebracht. De aankondiging gaat vergezeld met een gloednieuwe single ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’.
De band nam het album afgelopen jaar op afstand op vanuit hun respectievelijke huizen en heeft hard gewerkt om wellicht wel de boeiendste, inventiefste en meest vooruitstrevende muziek uit hun carrière tot nu toe te produceren. Met frontman Matthew “Murph” Murphy in Los Angeles, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen in Oslo en drummer Dan Haggis in Londen, bespraken ze de plannen elke dag via Zoom, namen ze afzonderlijk op en stuurden de individuele bestanden naar hun producers. “It was pure madness, to be honest”, zei Murph over het proces.
“We’re so excited for people to hear this new album! We’ve explored new genres and pushed ourselves further than ever musically. It will always stand out for us in our memories from our other albums as we recorded it across three cities during lockdown, and we weren’t all in the same room at the same time!”, voegt Dan toe.
Na ‘Method To The Madness’ is The Wombats’ nieuwe single ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’ een aanstekelijke electro-pop ode aan aanhankelijkheid. Over het nummer zegt Murph: “I noticed that 2020 and 2021 put some serious strain on interpersonal relationships, it felt like people around me were really struggling. For me, ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’ taps into all of that and asks the question… is it the circumstances putting undue stress on people? Or have the circumstances shed light on people’s incompatibility with one another?”
Sinds het debuut ‘A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation’ uit 2007 hebben The Wombats drie top 5 UK albums op hun naam staan en trekken inmiddels een groter publiek aan dan ooit tevoren. Het virale succes van Oliver Nelson’s remix van hun hit ‘Greek Tragedy’ uit 2015 op TikTok heeft een hele nieuwe generatie fans voortgebracht. De track is in meer dan 600.000 video’s (waarvan sommige meer dan 100 miljoen keer zijn bekeken) gebruikt. Het heeft hen ook geholpen om 2,4 miljoen extra maandelijkse luisteraars te vergaren op Spotify sinds januari.
