‘Look Now’, opgenomen in Hollywood, New York City en Vancouver, British Columbia, is prachtig in zijn simpelheid, beschouwend in tekstuele visie en gevat in hemelse melodieën en muzikale arrangementen. Het is het eerste album van Costello met The Imposters sinds ‘Momofuku’ (2008) en zijn eerste nieuwe album sinds het legendarische ‘Wise Up Ghost’ (2013).
Iedereen die Elvis Costello and The Imposters ooit live heeft gezien zal beamen dat de band absolute swagger heeft. Costello’s vermoeden dat het tijd was terug te keren naar de studio werd bevestigd tijdens de Amerikaanse ‘Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers’ tour afgelopen zomer, toen hij zich realiseerde dat de kracht en pure muzikaliteit van The Imposters nooit eerder goed op een album was vastgelegd. “I knew if we could make an album with the scope of ‘Imperial Bedroom’ and some of the beauty and emotion of ‘Painted From Memory’, we would really have something”, aldus Costello.
‘Look Now’ is tevens een uitstekende aanvulling op zijn eigen catalogus. Hij schreef de meeste tracks alleen, maar ‘Don’t Look Now’ en ‘Photographs Can Lie’ schreef hij samen met Burt Bacharach, die piano speelt op deze twee ballads. Ook leverde Bacharach een bijdrage aan ‘He’s Given Me Things’. De legendarische Carole King schreef ‘Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter’.
Het album is geproduceerd door Costello en Sebastian Krys – de Latin Grammy Producer of the Year 2007 en 2015. Over zijn eigen rol als co-producer zegt Costello: “I had all of the orchestrations and vocal parts in my head or on the page before we played a note, so it was essential that I worked closely with Steve Nieve to maintain the light and space in the arrangements and allow him to shine.”
Fans die het album nu al bestellen ontvangen een download van twee tracks: ‘Under Lime’ en ‘Unwanted Number’. Gevraagd naar zijn commentaar op dit Instant Gratification fenomeen, zegt Costello: “That’s just the latest record business gimmick-speak for something you can get right away. I have to be straight with you; that sounds like a personal service that you might be offered in a dubious massage parlour. I’d prefer to say that “The Elvis Costello Record Shop” is open for business again and when you pre-order the album, ‘Look Now’ you can get a couple of songs, RIGHT NOW.”
