The Neal Morse Band, bestaand uit Neal Morse (zang, gitaar, keyboards), Mike Portnoy (drums, zang), Randy George (bas), Bill Hubauer (keyboards, zang), Eric Gillette (gitaar, zang), komt op 25 januari 2019 met een nieuw dubbel concept album ‘The Great Adventure’. Het album komt uit op Radiant Records en wordt gedistribueerd door Metal Blade / Sony Music. Er verschijnen drie verschillende formaten: een 2CD, een 2CD+DVD Special Edition met behind-the-scenes video’s van het maken van het album en een 3LP pakket.
De opvolger van het in 2016 zeer enthousiast ontvangen ‘The Similitude Of A Dream’ is het negende album van Morse, Portnoy en George en het derde album van de huidige line-up. Morse en Portnoy hebben samen vier bands opgezet, maar de langst lopende en dus met de meeste albums is The Neal Morse Band.
“Let the great adventure now begin…”. Het einde van ‘The Similitude Of A Dream’ blijkt nu verrassend voorspellend te zijn, het nieuwe album is precies dat: het perfecte vervolg op TSOAD’s gedeeltelijke vertelling van John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. ‘The Great Adventure’ heeft alles wat de fans verwachten van een album van The Neal Morse Band: rock, metal, klassiek en jazz invloeden en killer melodieën en dat alles gespeeld door een paar van de beste artiesten op aarde.
Neal Morse legt uit: “This band continues to amaze me! I have to say it was a little daunting to follow up “The Similitude Of A Dream” as it was such a special album and it delivered every night at our concerts, but I believe that “The Great Adventure” will have a tremendous impact as well. This new double album is everything that I hoped it would be! I listened through last night and I was in tears at the end!“
Mike Portnoy is het daar helemaal mee eens. Hij zegt: “How do you follow an epic double concept album??? Well, create another epic double concept album!! Hahaha. I always knew topping “The Similitude Of A Dream” was going to be difficult, if not impossible, as I held it in such high regard, but alas, I am absolutely blown away with what we achieved here! We’ve created what is the ultimate companion to TSOAD.”
Randy George voegt hier aan toe: “Sometimes there are things that you just can’t mess with, on “The Similitude Of A Dream” we tapped into something special. I was sure that the follow up should be something quite different, but you have to follow your heart and follow the music where it wants to go. “The Great Adventure” is nothing short of a miracle. It’s similar to Similitude in concept and form, but yet it’s tougher and deeper in its tone! This is a powerful work and I look forward to playing it live!
Meestal worden de Neal Morse album geschreven en gearrangeerd in een paar weken, maar deze keer duurde het bijna een jaar. Met als resultaat een overvloed aan kwalitatief zeer hoogstaand materiaal. Op het laatste moment moest er dus veel materiaal sneuvelen, waaronder complete nummers en enkele karakters. Neal Morse zegt hierover: “A lot of work and re-work has gone into this, but I know that some of the most successful and far-reaching albums I’ve been involved with have been just like that. “Sola Scripta” and Spock’s Beard’s “Snow” album come to mind.”
Een ander “probleem” dat opgelost moest worden is hoe alle ideeën tot een coherent geheel te smeden. Uiteindelijk realiseerde Morse zich dat ‘The Great Adventure’ een nieuwe stem en perspectief nodig had dan op TSOAD. Deze keer is het die van de wat jongere en kwadere stem van de verlaten zoon van de Pilgrim.
Vanaf 3 februari gaat The Neal Morse Band ook weer de wereld over om ‘The Great Adventure’ live te vertolken. Ze beginnen in Nashville en komen dan eind maart naar Europa. Voor de Benelux staan 26 maart de 013, Tilburg en 27 maart de Rockhal, Luxemburg in de planning.
