Internationaal geprezen gitaarheld Michael Romeo kondigt de release aan van zijn langverwachte eerste officiële soloalbum; ‘War of the Worlds / Pt. 1′. Het album komt uit op 27 juli 2018 via Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group. De oprichter en hoofd-songwriter van de progressieve band Symphony X verdedigd op deze plaat zijn reputatie als vooraanstaand gitarist en componist van symfonische metal.
“It’s me putting all the things I love about music in a blender,” zegt Romeo. “Somebody might listen to it and say, ‘What is this guy thinking?’ But it’s all about being creative and having a good time with it.”
Ongetwijfeld zullen er enthousiaste reacties komen vanuit Romeo’s trouwe fanbasis. ‘War of the Worlds / Pt. 1’ staat bol van het soort suspensevolle gitaarstukken waarmee de beste man in het verleden geplaatst werd in talloze ‘beste gitarist’ lijstjes. Het album biedt ook onconventionele twists; naast de klassieke metal texturen, eert Romeo film componisten als Bernard Hermann en John Williams, en er zijn zelfs enkele verrassende EDM / dubstep-elementen in verwerkt. Dit alles zorgt voor een interessante muzikale reis.
Romeo heeft het grootste deel van ‘War of the Worlds / Pt. 1′ gedurende een periode van anderhalf jaar opgenomen in zijn thuisstudio in Hazlet, New Jersey (door zijn vrouw liefkozend “the Dungeon” genoemd). Het project gaf hem de perfecte gelegenheid om te werken met de Long Island-nieuwkomer Castellano, een zanger waar hij al een tijd mee samen wilde werken. Ook zijn collega’s Macaluso en Black Label Society-lid DeServio van de partij. “JD and I went to high school together,” zegt Romeo. “We always wanted to do something together, so this was the perfect opportunity. The planets finally aligned, and we were able to work together. It was great to have him play on it.”
Na twee decennia kunnen Symphony X-fans hun hart ophalen bij dit eerste solo album van Michael Romeo (afgezien van zijn demo-opname uit 1994, ‘The Dark Chapter’, welke slechts in een aantal landen werd uitgebracht). En de gitarist belooft een vervolg – “Most of Part II is already finished,” zegt hij, “It just needs a few vocals, a couple solos, a few tweaks here and there. I want people to absorb the first one for a while, and then we’ll put out the second record. They’ll complement each other, but they’ll also be a bit different.”
