Florence + The Machine brengt op vrijdag 29 mei haar derde album ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ uit. Gisteravond ging de tweede single van het album, ‘Ship To Wreck’ in première. De Britse Florence Welch brak op haar 21e wereldwijd door met haar twee hitalbums ‘Lungs’ (2009) en ‘Ceremonials’ (2010). De afgelopen vijf jaar was de eigenzinnige zangeres non-stop aan het songschrijven, promoten en toeren. Eenmaal terug in het ouderlijk huis in het plaatsje Camberwell besloot Florence dat het tijd werd om echt op eigen benen te staan. Ze verliet het huis van haar moeder, vond een eigen woning, werd verliefd en voelde hoe haar hart gebroken werd. Maar bovenal leerde ze hoe ze voor zichzelf moest zorgen zonder de beschermende bubbel die het tourleven haar de afgelopen jaren bood.
“It was sort of a crash landing,” geeft Florence toe. “I guess although I’ve always dealt in fantasy and metaphor when I came to writing, that meant the songs this time were dealing much more in reality. ‘Ceremonials’ was so fixated on death and water, and the idea of escape or transcendence through death, but the new album became about trying to learn how live, and how to love in the world rather than trying to escape from it. Which is frightening because I’m not hiding behind anything but it felt like something I had to do.”
Het resultaat van Florence’s nieuwe levensstijl is te horen op het nieuwe album ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’. Het derde album is geproduceerd door Markus Dravs (Björk, Arcade Fire, Coldplay). “Markus has done a few Arcade Fire albums,” vertelt Florence over de samenwerking met de bekende producer, “and he’s done Björk’s ‘Homogenic’, which is a huge record for me. And I felt he had that balance of organic and electronic capabilities, managing those two worlds. And, you know, he’s good with big sounds. And l like big sounds. And he’s good with trumpets, and I knew I wanted a brass section on this record.”
