FSS staat voor een unieke samenwerking tussen Franz Ferdinand en Sparks. Hitmakers en festivalfavorieten Franz Ferdinand lieten zich ten tijde van hun debuutalbum in een interview ontvallen grote fans te zijn van Sparks, de band rondom de gebroeders Ron en Russell Mael. De makers van de wereldhit ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us’ besloten daarop contact op te nemen met de jonge Schotse band. Het gelijknamige album ‘FFS’ verschijnt 8 juni 2015 via Domino Records.
Russell Mael: “We thought ‘Take Me Out’ was very cool, and wouldn’t it be nice to say hello when they came to Los Angeles? We met and decided then it would be great to do something together. We put forward a couple demos, one was ‘Piss Off’. But they got swept up by everything, and it didn’t happen at that time.”
Tien jaar later, na een toevallige ontmoeting, besloten Alex Kapranos en de broers de destijds besproken samenwerking op te pakken en daadwerkelijk in gang te zetten. Het album werd in vijftien dagen opgenomen in de RAK studio’s in Londen en is geproduceerd door John Congleton (St. Vincent, Modest Mouse, David Byrne, Black Angels). Over de opnames zegt Alex Kapranos: “We approached it the way bands do with their first record. We had the songs first, rehearsed them and then recorded it all together, in a room. So no hanging around or fannying about.”
FFS klinkt niet als Franz Ferdinand of als Sparks, maar als een onverwacht sterke samensmelting. “The real motivation was to make something new, not ‘Franz featuring Russell Mael’, or ‘Sparks with Franz Ferdinand backing them.” vertelt zanger Kapranos. “You can’t chart what is Sparks and what is Franz Ferdinand,” vult Ron Mael aan. “I think each band unconsciously relinquished a little of who they were in order to enter new territory.” Vorige maand werd de eerste show, welke op 2 juli in Amsterdam plaatsvindt, aangekondigd. De tickets waren binnen een mum van tijd uitverkocht.
